Knowing Your Pelvic Anatomy is Crucial for Good Surgery!

One of the things that you should take into account when choosing your surgeon is their confidence in the pelvis and also their knowledge of pelvic anatomy. As an advanced endometriosis surgeon on the Gold Coast and also a gynaecological cancer surgeon, the pelvis is my happy place.

Through utilising the avascular spaces in the pelvis you are able to excise cancers with clear margins and excise deep infiltrating endometriosis. A sound knowledge of pelvic anatomy and extensive experience leads to the best patient outcomes.

I have included below (with patient permission) some images from a recent excision of endometriosis, where a full pelvic peritonectomy (removing the pelvic peritoneum, where endometriosis is deposited), has been done to remove endometriosis from the pelvic sidewalls and pouch of Douglas.

You can see the beautifully exposed external iliac vessels, ureters, uterosacral ligaments, pouch of Douglas (space between uterus and rectum), inferior hypogastric plexus (nerves) and rectum, this patient has had a great outcome and improvement in their quality of life and symptoms post surgery.
